The U.S. Mint continued to experience production difficulties in 2009 as a result of the unprecedented world wide demand for silver and silver bullion related products. The U.S. Mint ran short of the silver blanks used to strike the American Silver Eagle coins, affecting both the 2009 uncirculated and proof editions.

For the year, a new record of 30,459,000 uncirculated coins were minted in 2009. However, due to the production difficulties mention above, no proof Silver Eagle coins were struck in 2009, leaving a “hole” in the series.

The price of silver continued to be strong in 2009. The average was $14.67 per ounce for the year, and reached lows of $10.51 per ounce, and highs of $19.18 per ounce.
